A Falun Gong couple attack a pregnant woman in Beijing

At about 1:30 on the afternoon of July 7, 2009, a couple assaulted a pregnant woman with scissors at a residential courtyard near the entrance to Xiaobao Village, Songzhuang Town in Tongzhou District, Beijing. The place is also known as the Painters Village for most residents living here are artists.

The victim is 24-year-old Ms. Teng at two-month pregnancy and the assaulters are Wang Zhiping and Song Wanling, both are practitioners of Falun Gong and returned from the U.S. in 2007. The three live in the same courtyard. On the day when the assault occurred, Teng was taking the public path which just passes in front of the house of the couple, while Wang Zhiping and his wife were trimming the plants. The couple stopped Teng on her way by claiming that the path was private. They had a quarrel and started to call each other names. The couple became so mad that they turned a deaf ear to the words of the onlookers that Teng was pregnant and stabbed Teng on the face and in the belly with scissors. Out of instinct, Teng tried to cover her belly with her hands but ended up three broken teeth and a 5cm long wound in the left hand. The scissors cut both the blood vessel and the tendon of her left palm.

A neighbor called the police and the police officers took away the couple and put them under criminal detention. Teng was sent to hospital and forced to terminate the pregnancy due to medical treatment and mental stimulation.

Then who are the assaulters?

Song Wanling, female, 44 years old, is a graduate of a music school based in Handan, Hebei Province, and started to practice Falun Gong when she went to US in 1996. During her stay in US, apart from helping Wang Zhiping with his paintings propagandizing Falun Gong, Wang became an activist and took part in many activities organized by Falun Gong organizations. She sang a song entitled “Clarifying Thoughts” at the Chinese New Year Spectacular (later on known as the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular) held on January 19, 2004, in New York, and sang another song “Our Hearts are Singing Happily” at the Chinese Spectacular held on March 3, 2004, at Kennedy Center in Washington DC. The so-called Chinese New Year Splendor shows propagandize the doctrines of Falun Gong and smear Chinese government. The New York Times published an article entitled A Glimpse of Chinese Culture That Some Find Hard to Watch on February 6, 2008, and the author noticed that many audience “had realized that the show was not simply a celebration of the Chinese New Year, but an outreach of Falun Gong, a spiritual practice of calisthenics and meditation that is banned in China” and the “audience members who filed out of Radio City before and during intermission said they were troubled by the material”.

Wang Zhiping, male, 46, is a graduate of an academy of fine arts majoring in sculpture and made a living on painting after he arrived in US in 1996. He started to practice Falun Gong in 1997 under the influence of his wife and attended “Teaching the Fa in New York City” lectured by Li Hongzhi in 1999. From April 2003 to March 2005, he produced a series of crayon drawings on the so-called “persecutions on Falun Gong imposed by Chinese government”, including “The Battle Between Good and Evil”, “The Cruel Torture with a Scorching Pillar”, and “The Persecution of Women”. He also took part in so-called “Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance” exhibitions organized by Falun Gong time after time and applied for political asylum for the sake of getting the permanent residence permit in the US.

The news about this Falun Gong couple self claiming to pursue “Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance” stabbing a pregnant woman because of a mere trifle has become a hot topic among local people.

How the Falun Gong cult gently manipulates the media

The voice sounded conspirative. “It’s about the group whose members have been arrested on the big square in Peking,” said the man on the other end of the telephone line. He said he was a Sinology student from Frankfurt just back from a trip to China and he would like to have a conversation “about the reporting by German newspapers.”

The young German who introduced himself as Peter Recknagel said he had good reason to be careful. The “group” which he mentioned on the telephone was the Falun Gong movement, which is banned in China. Thousands of Falun Gong adherents had been taken into custody and the state media resound with a propaganda war against the alleged “devil’s cult” (“xiejiao”).

So what does Peter Recknagel have to do with that? It wasn’t long before the small, wiry man got to the point. The German media did report on the persecution of the Falun Gong movement in China, said Recknagel and looked quite concerned, “but they write that we are a cult.”

Journalist in Peking are familiar with the arguments which the young man brought forward. When the Chinese banned the movement in June 1999, adherents from overseas launched a media counter-campaign. Journalists who described them as a “cult” or “sect” received letters, e-mails or telephone calls from disciples of the Falun Gong. The movement, founded by “Master” Li Hongzhi, living in exile, is said to be neither a religion nor a cult or a sect, they say. “We are a harmless meditation movement,” stated Peter Recknagel.

But the Falun Gong is probably not that harmless. The movement, which says it has gained several dozen million adherents worldwide since 1992, has elements of Qi-Gong, Buddhism and Taoism, and it fixates upon its founder Li Hongzhi in a bizarre personality cult. Indeed his meditation exercises basically aim for a “moral improvement” of the practitioners. But racist and discriminatory elements also surface in his teachings. The Master describes half-breeds as “defective persons.” As far as he is concerned, homosexuality is as bad as murder or using narcotics. “Falun Gong can be described as a sect – it is a community with common beliefs, rituals and assemblies,” says Sebastian Heilmann, professor of Sinology at the Trier University. But it is not to be regarded as a “Chinese Scientology.” The adherents are subjected to neither financial nor to emotional pressure.

A string of evidence points to there being a powerful organization which directs the Falun Gong disciples in the background. The center of the movement, which makes considerable income through book rights and videos, is in New York, the place of exile for Li Hongzhis. Apparently it is from New York that the demonstrations of Falun Gong disciples on the Square of Heavenly Peace are coordinated.

There also appears to be some calculation behind the media work by the Falun Gong disciples. The cult is presented solely as a victim in the constant operations and provoked arrests. Background on Master Li, the organizational structure or the psychic results of the teachings of salvation upon the disciples can barely be found in the media. Peter Recknagel, chief of the Frankfurt section of the Falung Gong association, also keeps that to himself. He either cannot or will not report on how the Master in New York manages his worldwide community.

Four Falun Gong disciples convicted in Changchun for killing a fellow practitioner

According to the news released by China News Agency in Changchun on November 26 (reported by Zhong Xin), four Falun Gong practitioners in Changchun, the capital city of Jilin Province, wanted to help their fellow practitioner Ms. Xiao by using force to get rid of the so-called “fox spirit” from her body this April and were held responsible for the consequent death of Xiao. Changchun Intermediate People’s Court processed the case recently and produced first-instance sentence.

The court made investigations and concluded that the victim and four defendants, Yu Xuewei, Wang Haipeng, Gao Hongqing, and Jin Mingdong, were Falun Gong practitioners. At one o’clock on the afternoon of April 7 this year, and at the home of Yu’s, four defendants discussed and believed that Ms. Xiao was haunted by a “fox spirit”, which would greatly affect her cultivation. Accordingly, Yu and Gao proposed to remove the demon by beating Xiao. The two slapped Xiao in the face and head with slippers. Then Yu Xuewei, Gao Hongqing, and Jin Mingdong put bottles containing frozen things and hot water in turn on the chest and stomach of Xiao’s. Jin also pricked Xiao in the philtrum, a vital acupuncture point in the middle of upper lip, with a sewing needle; then Gao and Jin bound the hands and feet of Xiao with bed sheet.

At five o’clock on the afternoon that day, Yu Xuewei sent for Wang Haipeng. Wang joined others and kicked hard at Xiao on the head, chest, stomach, and back. After four hours of brutal beating by the four of them and at five o’clock, Xiao was found unconscious without breath. They called 120 for help, but the rescue came too late and Xiao was announced dead by the medical staff. According to the results of medical examination, Ms. Xiao died of hemorrhagic shock and broken liver, kidney, and lungs due to external force.

According to the court decision, Wang Haipeng was condemned to death sentence suspended for two years with all his political rights deprived for lifetime; Yu Xuewei and Gao Hongqing were sentenced to lifetime imprisonment with political rights being deprived for lifetime; Jin Mingdong was sentenced to 15-year imprisonment with his political rights deprived for 5 years. Furthermore, the court also ordered the four defendants to share the civil liabilities by compensating a total of 280,000 yuan to the relatives of Xiao.

Nina Karpachova calls for the government’s ban on Falun Gong in Ukraine

Nina Karpachova, the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights,said in a recent media interview that the Ukrainian government should take measures to ban Falun Gong organization in the country.

She says most Falun Gong practitioners in Ukraine are employed and get their salary regularly. Their main task is to stir up troubles in the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Ukraine and the center of Kiev, and to carry out acts of sabotage during Chinese leaders’ visits. In fact, under the banner of religion, what they are engaged in are cultic and political activities, which is exactly the same as other international cults, including the People’s Temple and Aum Supreme Truth. This also defies the modern civilization and brings great harm to the society.

Karpachova says she understands and supports Chinese government’s ban on Falun Gong organization according to law. And she has appealed to the Ukrainian government for banning the local “Falun Gong Follower Association” out of human rights protection, which could make the Ukrainian citizens, especially the teenagers avoid the delusion and harm of Falun Gong organization.

I used to take my husband as a “demon”

My name is Zhang Yuhua; I’m 56 years old and a retired worker from YInan County Distillery. I gave up Falun Gong seven years ago and since then, I had never talked about my obsession with a cult. But several days ago I received a tabloid from Minghui Online and it propagandized about the benefits of practicing Falun Gong by saying that the Dafa disciples had been better persons and enjoyed happy family life since then started to practice it. At reading these lies, I couldn’t help my anger. So I decided to tell others what had happened to me so that people would know the truth and terrible consequences of being crazy about Falun Gong.

I used to be so obsessed with Falun Gong that I took my husband as a “demon” interfering with my cultivation and almost killed him for that.

All started in 1998. I had suffered slipped spinal discs for a long time and found no cure to it. I heard people said that Falun Gong was an effective solution to all diseases and decided to give it a try. After six-month practicing, my pains relieved greatly and I was convinced. I had no idea at that time that what actually worked was qigong and exercises, that doing exercises would gradually restore protruded spinal discs. Instead, I believed that it was Falun Gong that created the miracle.

Since then, I had been greatly grateful to Li Hongzhi and began to read his Zhuan Falun. Li said that the root of all human diseases was “karma” and illness was a natural result of the bad things a patient had done before, that to practice Falun Gong was the only way to remove “karma”, illness, and pain. To make things better, Master would also “clean the body” of practitioners so that they would be illness-free and immune to all hurts and pains. I felt so lucky and thought to myself: to practice Falun Gong could build up my health and could make me an immortal; that’s a rare chance and I must treasure it. So I made up my mind to stick to Falun Gong and to follow all the instructions of Li Hongzhi, the “leading Buddha in universe”, without any doubt ever again.

Getting more and more obsessed with Falun Gong, I didn’t care about my kid and husband any more and had no time to cook for them. Back then, my kid was at senior high school and, as a mother, I should have took good care of him. But all I wanted at that time was my “cultivation” and I would usually hurry to the local market for food ready to serve and gave it to my son, who needed good nutrition for his health as a teen. To make things worse, in order to send forth righteous thoughts, I had no time to get even ready food for my son and sometime he had to go to school with an empty stomach. As time went by, both my son and my husband became angry at me. My husband talked to me several times and said I couldn’t do this to our son. As a mother, I felt guilty at hearing his accusation; but at the thought of the words by Li Hongzhi, such as “when you finally make it, all your relatives will be beings in your heavenly world”, “If you succeed in cultivating into a great god or a great Buddha. Will you have such a power? Of course, let alone save your relatives, you will be able to hold the earth in your palm with no effort at all”, I felt no remorse at all; on the contrary, I felt complacent instead, for I believed that what I was doing would bring blessings to my son. I kept practicing Falun Gong and ignored the reproach of my husband.

When Chinese government banned Falun Gong as a cult in 1999, my husband told me: “I had this feeling a long time ago; you practitioners care for nobody but themselves, and this is not right. I believe the government would see to it sooner or later. Now I know I was right at that time.” Hearing his slander on Falun Gong, I felt furious. With this and the protest of my fellow against the government on banning Falun Gong, I decided to go to Tian’anmen Square to distribute publicization materials and to help more people understand the “truth”. After I was gone, my husband searched everywhere for me, for he knew his wife had never stepped out of this city before. I learned it later that, my husband hardly slept during seven days while I’d gone to Beijing, searching all the places he thought I might have been. But at that time, I thought my husband was as evil as the government treating good people wrongly and unjustly. When I was detained by local authority for distributing materials against the law, my husband tried all means to make me give it up. But being affected by the heretical idea believing that “all interfering with Fa study are demons” by Li Hongzhi, I took my husband as an obstacle on my road of cultivation. When local government gave me a second chance and sent me back home, instead of being grateful to the leniency of the authority and taking the opportunity to mend the damaged relationship with my husband, I tried my best to fight against both the government and my husband for not allowing me to practice Falun Gong.

At learning that I kept distributing in secret the promotion materials in favor of Falun Gong, my husband said to me: “Since the government has banned Falun Gong as a cult, you’re violating the law by doing this. Even if you are not afraid of going to jail, please think of our son and me. With you here at home, our family is complete; without you, it will be broken and so will be the hearts of our boy and me. By the way, this is his last year in high school and our son is at the most critical moment in the life. As his parents, even if we don’t give him much support, at least we can’t hold him back and be his burden. You say you want to be a better person by practicing Falun Gong, but look, you can’t even take good care of your own kid, will that make you a better person?” At hearing his words, I had the feeing that I didn’t do the right thing and should have supported my son when he worked so hard for the college entrance examination. So I restrained myself a little bit.

But my fellow practitioners showed me the scriptures of Li Hongzhi, it said: “In this situation, as a Dafa Disciple, you should clarify truth, reveal evils, and protect Dafa; during this process, you will improve yourself and achieve consummation”; “I feel so sorry for those not being able to stand the severe test of sufferings by covering the fact that they’re afraid with various excuses”; “are those obtaining Fa yet failing in validating Fa qualified Dafa disciples? No matter how hard they try to study and practice Fa at home, they’ve been controlled by demons and will get nothing but false enlightenment”, “the disciples stepping out are great”; “I feel so happy for the disciples stepping out to validate Fa during past year and feel happy for the Great Enlightened Beings in future; whether being detained or losing human lives due to the resolute cultivation of Dafa, they have achieved consummation”. I felt sorry to “Master” and to Data; more importantly, I would never achieve consummation if I didn’t leave home and going out. So I decided to make it up to my belief with more efforts.

Being afraid that my husband might find out my real intention, I went out at night with the excuse of doing exercises and joined local fellow practitioners. But my husband was so careful that he soon found out the real picture and didn’t allow me to leave home at night alone. Being guarded by him, I felt uncomfortable and called other practitioners. They told me: “Your husband has been controlled by demons; that’s why he interferes with your cultivation. You should send forth righteous thoughts to get rid of the evil force behind him.” I followed their advice and have sent forth righteous thoughts for a month; but nothing changed and my husband kept preventing me from practicing Falun Gong. Then my fellow practitioners sneaked in and gave me more scriptures including Great Exposure and Serious Church, which I found enlightening. For the sake of my family, I insisted on practicing at home.

But at the same time, I became more and more angry and it seemed to me that my husband was exactly the “demon” described by “Master”, for he always interfered with my Fa study and cultivation. I had to pretend doing other things while he was home with me and could only practice Falun Gong while he was gone. I felt exhausted and believed that Falun Gong did the right thing by teaching practitioners to be better people and helping them to build up health. Therefore, I targeted all angers at my husband. I remembered clearly the words by Li Hongzhi: “those interfering with Fa study are demons…the wretched demons just deserve to be killed.” So I gradually developed the thoughts of killing him. Looking at him, I sometimes had the feeling that his body was the domicile of “demon”. But I had been with him for two decades; I felt so confused that I couldn’t do it even if I tried several times. When I prepared a kitchen knife and planned to wave it at him, my husband knew nothing about it and still took good care of me as always.

It was on February 3, 2001, he went back home after work and told me about the suicidal burning incident at Tian’anmen Square. I was astonished at first but then discarded it as his lies, for Li Hongzhi said in Zhuan Falun that no practitioner should kill. It never occurred to me that the reason why those practitioners killing themselves was because they wanted to achieve consummation advocated in Towards Consummation by Li Hongzhi. At that time, I believed that my husband lied to me and that was the last straw breaking the back of the camel. Li Hongzhi said: “If the evil has already reached the point where it is unsavable and unkeepable, then various measures at different levels can be used to stop it and eradicate it…Completely eliminating the evil is for Fa-rectification, and not a matter of personal cultivation”, “those who destroy Dafa are demons and the wretched demons just deserve to be killed.” I felt that the only way for me to stick to the road of cultivation and to achieve the consummation is to get rid of the “demon”.

Having been brainwashed by various heretical ideas for a long time, I could no longer think properly and became absent-minded. In my mind, my husband interfered with my cultivation and he was so evil that the only right thing to do is to kill him and get rid of the “demon”. That day, when my husband was busy setting the table for dinner, I saw a demon of tiger in his place and waved a kitchen knife at his head. Being tripped by the dinner table, I missed the target. At seeing that I wanted to kill him, my husband got the knife from my hand by force and had no choice but to send me to a local psychotherapy clinic in March 2001.

At the clinic, I gradually recovered and, with the patient help of the staff, I started to think about why people lost their mind and even committed crimes by killing others and themselves after they practiced Falun Gong. The clinic staff analyzed the manipulating nature of opinions and ideas of Li Hongzhi aiming to achieve spiritual control of all practitioners; I realized the potential dangers and horrible consequences and became aware of the truth behind the hypnotic cultivation he advocated. I understood that it was an inevitable result that all practitioners would lose their normal thinking and reasoning capacities. If it were not that my husband sent me to the clinic in time, if it were not that the tutors at the clinic talked to me with great patience, I would have ended up like other victims of the cult, such as Guan Shuyun and Fu Yibin, and became a real murderer.

Looking back at all these makes me remorseful and sad. After I gave up Falun Gong seven years ago, I have tried my best to compensate it to my family, especially my husband whom I almost killed as a demon. It was such a nightmare at thinking about the horrible consequences of being crazy about a cult and I felt so anxious at seeing those still on the road where I used to be. I hope you would real my story carefully and make the right choice by learning a good lesson from my experience.

Get out of the trap of Falun Gong

I’m Li Fangli, 40 years old, and work at Weinan Bridge Division of China Railway First Group Co., Ltd. I started to practice Falun Gong in April 1998 and had been hopelessly involved in the destructive community of cult since then, accepting unconditionally all the theories advocated by Li Hongzhi. Under the control of heretical ideas, I had done a lot of ridiculous things and great damages to myself and to my family. Looking back to what happened at that time I’m still emotional and have to spit out these tense feelings.

When the shocking Zhongnanhai Incident broke out on April 25, 1999, I read only a little of “scriptures” and therefore hardly got what was really happening. On July 22, Chinese government banned Falun Gong; but watching TV programs about how practitioners died, got injured, and were disabled because of practicing Falun Gong, I felt disgruntled and rebellious. I told whoever I met that what they said on TV were rumors and slander, was sheer propaganda by government; at the same time, I met other fellow practitioners to discuss the latest “scriptures”. When I was doing all these, I became increasingly angry at the government. In 2000, Li Hongzhi pointed out clearly in his Towards Consummation: “Disciples are waiting to achieve the consummation, and I can wait no more. Step out against the pressure so as to prove to the world that the disciples of Fa are great. The disciples facing up to the comprehensive and severe tests would finally establish the solid foundation of Dafa in the world and the concrete representation of Dafa in the man’s world; while at the same time they would also achieve consummation by finding the greatest position for themselves. Everyone, you’ll get your place in future by choice.” At reading it, I knew it was time for me to step out to “protect Fa”; otherwise, I would fail in the test and would never achieve consummation. But I was delayed due to various reasons. Then I heard that lots of practitioners gathered at Tian’anmen Square after October 1 and I noticed this sentence in the new “scripture”: “those hiding in home can only get False Enlightenment no matter how hard they have tried.” I couldn’t sit at home doing nothing at all and finally left home for Beijing.

I was punished for openly defying the government and for interfering with normal social orders; I pretended to be obedient under the pressure but didn’t regret it at all deep in my heart. I went to Beijing two more times in 2001 and 2004 to “protect Fa”.

Being spiritually controlled by Li Hongzhi and brainwashed by his scriptures, I went to Beijing with the task of “protecting Fa” for three times. Every time, I left home without telling my family; and every time I did it, it was such a blow to them. After I left for Beijing, my parents, my husband, and my daughter were so worried. My mother cried a lot out of concerns, but I thought that I was doing this to “cultivate away fame, material interest, and emotion”, to “let go of the last attachments of ordinary beings”, to meet the requirements of Li Hongzhi, and to “go up to higher level and achieve consummation.”

My running away from home for several times hurt my husband in particular and I was soon realized that I should not do this to him any more. So I made up my mind to stop. But I was still obsessed with cultivation and always quarreled with him about studying Fa and practicing Falun Gong. At realizing that I was hopeless, my husband started to drink a lot and came back home very late. As for me, I chose to ignore him and kept doing what I wanted to do. Because of this, our love gradually faded away and we couldn’t find a topic even when we really manage to sit together.

During the twelfth lunar month in 2005, having been crazy about Falun Gong for a long time, I started to experience hallucination. For three days, I heard the same voice and believed that it was “Master” who told me a long complete story. It said that before “Master” arrived at the earth, there was a God in the higher level of universe. The God was created and brought to the man’s world for cycles of death and rebirth and had managed to acquire great virtues after numerous tribulations. The voice told me that each life of the God was arranged by “Master”, that the God used to be beheaded for several times and then was reborn to be great poets, being a man first and then a woman. For ten thousand years, this God had endured and cultivated so as to help Master to rectify Fa when Fa was endangered. “Master” finally told me that the “God” was me.

Since then, my thinking changed completely and I felt like the ruler of the universe and became proud and arrogant. I believed that my soul was created by Li Hongzhi, that I came from a world of higher level, and that I had a great mission here in man’s world in this life. To make things worse, I thought the hallucination was actually a way that “Master” tried to enlighten me so as to help me to go a higher level of cultivation. It was time to severe all the worldly attachments. With the thought, I burned my marriage certificate, left a note and went away from home again.

I did odd jobs in Henan Province for several months at first. I knew that my family must be worried about me; but I overcame the homesickness and didn’t even make a call back home. Finally, I missed my girl so much and felt so guilty that I went back home by train.

But it was too late and my husband officially filed for a divorce. This is the first time I knew what it was like to be abandoned by family. Seeing the painful expressions on the face of my parents and the eyes full of tears of my daughter, I finally realized how stupid and ridiculous I was to be so crazy about “going up to a higher level.”

Shen Yun, a political tool of Falun Gong

New Tang Dynasty Television (NTDTV) and its subordinated Shen Yun Performing Arts, also known as Divine Performing Arts, are both affiliated organizations of evil cult Falun Gong. Since 2004, NTDTV and Shen Yun Performing Arts have launched  shows all over the world in the name of “publicizing traditional Chinese culture” and cheated the public not knowing the truth into the theater for the performance. This article will not only go into details about the quality of performing arts of these shows but also reveal the truth about their propagandizing cultic doctrines of Falun Gong and attacking Chinese government by focusing on their content.

1. Analysis on the Content of Shows staged by Shen Yun Performing Arts

We make an analysis by taking the content of Shen Yun Performing Arts shows as an example.

The programs of Shen Yun Performing Arts shows touring the world can be roughly divided into three categories, that is, programs centering mainly on traditional Chinese culture, programs propagandizing Falun Gong doctrines, and programs making wrong accusation on Chinese government for “persecuting” Falun Gong.

The first category centers mainly on traditional Chinese culture featuring folk dances and music, such as Yi nationality dance “Dance of the Yi”, Tibetan dance “Snow-Capped Mountain”, “Mongolian Chopsticks Dance”, as well as dance dramas “Mulan Joins the Battle”, “The Poet’s Vision”, “Monk Ji Gong Abducts the Bride”, and “The Monkey King Triumphs”. To pacify the audience and to cover their real intention, these programs were usually staged during the first half of the performance.

Programs of the second category propagandize the doctrine of Falun Gong, such as “Do Not Hesitate”, “Giving You Hope”, “The Udumbara’s Bloom”, “Holy Falun King”, “The Rotating Wheel of Fa”, and “Beauty Leading to Miracles”. These programs can further fall into following types:

The first type of programs are used by Li Hongzhi to exert mental control over his believers and all of them boast without exception the “greatness” of Li Hongzhi, Falun Gong, and Dafa disciples, which can be seen clearly through the lyrics of the songs in these programs:

“Do Not Hesitate”: “In confusion we wait for the God and the Savior, we’re looking forward that the gate of Heaven opens soon. The Creator, the Creator has already been here. The truth passed from practitioners can solve the mystery, Do not hesitate, take this chance in history.”

“Giving You Hope”: “A soprano sang feelingly, “For whom do we brave the elements? For whom are we bearing hardships despite harsh weather? Standing on the sidewalk, followers of Dafa / Leaflets in hand born of effort and compassion … / We wish only to share with you a hopeful tomorrow.”

The second type of programs tries to deify Li Hongzhi by claiming that he is the reincarnation of Li Shimin the great emperor of Tang Dynasty (618-907) and the Holy Falun King descending to man’s world. Since Li Hongzhi used to hint at his origin as the reincarnation of Emperor Li Shimin and the Buddha descending in the world, a large amount of programs of Shen Yun Performing Arts center on this theme:

 “Holy Falun King”: “The King of kings descends to our Earth / He saves us by teaching Truthfulness, Compassion and Tolerance / The King of kings descends to our Earth / He brings us good luck and the law of universe / The Lord turns Falun to remake the cosmos / He turns our ordinary people into gods / Now our Lord is calling people to follow Dafa / Never let the worldly attachments puzzle us / This is a chance once in a thousand years / And do not hesitate over your best choice” The song flatters Li Hongzhi without any reservation as the King of Celestial Kings who came to the man’s world to “save the beings” before the doomsday and urges people to join in Falun Gong as soon as possible if they don’t want to lose the chance to “become god”.

Dance drama “The Udumbara’s Bloom” tries to deify Li Hongzhi by claiming that he is Holy Zhuanlun King descending to the man’s world.

The third type of programs distorts and claims traditional Chinese culture with a long history of 5,000 years as the so-called “divine culture”, and the representative program is “The Five Millennia Begin”, the opening program at Shen Yun Performing Arts shows. Falun Gong organization promotes the program by saying that, “China was known as Shenzhou in ancient times, which means the Land Blessed by Gods; and Chinese culture is known as divine culture for the people of China believed their culture as divinely bestowed by gods living together with people. The core of Chinese culture consists of the content of respecting heaven and fate as well as emphasizing moralities and beneficence. But we’re sorry to witness that these good traditions have been destroyed in past five decades, resulting in the complete loss of cultural essence that can be dated back to five thousand years ago. Shen Yun Performing Arts comes into being to answer the call of the times and takes it as its mission to inherit and create authentic culture and to revive the true, five-millennia-old artistic tradition of China by praising rustic life and firm beliefs as well as promoting the respect and gratitude toward gods. The dances are classical and elegant with exquisite beauty and the performance is solemn and sublime, which is capable of penetrating into the heart of the viewers and providing audiences everywhere with an experience of sublime beauty.”

Programs of the third category of the shows are themed on Chinese government “persecuting” Falun Gong, such as dance dramas “Heaven Awaits Us Despite Persecution”, “Dignity and Compassion”, and “Knowing the True Picture Offers Ultimate Hope”.

 “Heaven Awaits Us Despite Persecution” fabricates the stories about Falun Gong being persecuted and smears the image of both Chinese government and law enforcement officials. According to the interpretation of Falun Gong media, the program describes a group of people in mainland China being brutally persecuted by Communist Party of China for their believing in “Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance” and for practicing Falun Gong but no brutality can shake their firm belief in Falun Gong. With kindness and evil being repaid respectively, the program ends with the practitioners being persecuted to death winning eternal life by overcoming the evil force.

Dancing program “Dignity and Compassion” is also about a fabricated story of a Falun Gong practitioner being persecuted. Falun Gong media explains that the program tells the stories about a Dafa disciples imprisoned in mainland China being tortured and about to die. After the policeman torturing her falls asleep, the Law-Protection God in another space takes away his life so as to punish him for committing the infinite crimes. At the same time, the Dafa disciple has become Bodhisattva and kindly saves his life, informing him about the horrible consequences of participating in the persecution of Dafa disciples. The policeman wakes up and regrets what he has done; he releases the Dafa disciple and begs for her forgiveness.

It shall be noted that, when introducing Shen Yun Performing Arts shows, Falun Gong media usually emphasizes these two programs of “Heaven Awaits US Despite Persecution” and “Dignity and Compassion”, both of which center on the theme of attacking Chinese government. According to the report by NTDTV on August 30, 2009, after seeing the show by Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Kennedy Center, separatist Rebiya Kadeer told the reporter, “The show is so good that I can’t find the right words for it. Very high level and very good. Democracy, human rights, ancient times, and modern times were all depicted [in the performance].” Rebiya mentioned especially her impression on two dance programs of “Heaven Awaits Us Despite Persecution” and “Dignity and Compassion” about Falun Gong practitioners being persecuted and said, “The persecution on Falun Gong has been well expressed and the performance is beautiful and peaceful as well.”

2. The Deceptive Nature of Shen Yun Performing Arts shows

In the name of promoting “traditional culture”, Shen Yun Performing Arts presents these shows for more than merely cheating the audience into the theater. By publicizing the “persecution” on Falun Gong, it plans to make the show into an important platform for Falun Gong organization to publicize its cultic theories and to propagandize the heretical ideas of Li Hongzhi in the name of promoting “divine culture” so as to appeal to good-natured Chinese and foreign audiences not knowing the truth and to realize their evil purpose of exerting mind control over them.

Li Hongzhi has said for several times in public that the shows of Shen Yun Performing Arts are organized by local Falun Gong organizations at his order. Instead of entertaining the ordinary people, these shows are “to demonstrate the positive image of Dafa disciples, to save the public, and to clarify about the truth”. This shows that the so-called Shen Yun Performing Arts show is no only ordinary artistic performance but also a political tool that Falun Gong organization uses to propagandize cultic doctrines and anti-China theories, to expand its influence and to collect money. In terms of the nature, these shows fool, cheat, and poison the audience by distorting and smearing true traditional Chinese culture.

On the performance list of Shen Yun, there are always several programs based on ancient Chinese stories or folk arts, such as “Mulan Joins the Battle”, “The Poet’s Vision”, “The Loyalty of Yue Fei”, “Drummers of the Tang Court”, “Monk Ji Gong Abducts the Bride”, “Flowing Sleeves”, “Snow-Capped Mountain”, “The Monkey King Triumphs”, “Dance of the Yi”, “Mongolian Chopsticks”, and “Forsythia in Spring”. But as the old Chinese saying goes, a step-mother crying over a kid will definitely change her tone after three cries, the real focus of Shen Yun is on such programs as “Heaven Awaits Us Despite Persecution”, “Giving You Hope”, “The Udumbara’s Bloom”, “Dignity and Compassion”, “Holy Falun King”, “Knowing the True Picture Offers Ultimate Hope”, “Let Me Not Regret”, and “Be Cautious”. And the real purpose is to lead the audience into the scenes of horror and violence during happy holidays and Falun Gong achieves its goal at seeing the audience go back home with a sullen mood.

To hide something instead of exposing everything is actually a deliberate technique that Falun Gong organization adopts to promote its Shen Yun shows and it proves more successful than hard-selling. It’s like to season the tasteless meals or serving a dessert before the main course so as to tempt the audience into more programs. This is an experience that Falun Gong organization got through actual practices in past three to four years and works as mental anaesthesia for audience. The organizer knows it clearly that no western audience will accept physically and psychologically the direct political propaganda and “truth clarification” and they will leave the theater during the performance, which is a humiliation for the performers and the organizer. To make things worse, the audience dropping out will also tell others and no one will come to the performance in future; this is the last thing that the organizer wants to see.

But in spite of all the efforts made by the organizer, lots of US-based media have published articles in recent years revealing the truth about the shows by Falun Gong, such as New York Times’ A Glimpse of Chinese Culture That Some Find Hard to Watch on February 6, 2008 and Los Angeles Times’ Ties to Falun Gong add Controversy to the Chinese New Year Spectacular on January 7, 2008. Some US audiences going to the show without preparation are also aware of the truth later and have written online articles to tell the truth about these shows.

● On January 7, 2008, Los Angeles Times published Ties to Falun Gong Add Controversy to the Chinese New Year Spectacular that, “Most of the Chinese community think it’s linked too much with political events,” Michael Cheung, president of the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Assocation, based in downtown Los Angeles said, “I saw the show last year at the Kodak Theatre. Some of the content reflects politics and human rights; it is not exactly art.”

● On January 9, 2008, the American newspaper Star-Telegram commented in the article Show’s Beauty Shaded by Political Message: “The basic message – Falun Gong good, Chinese government bad – could not have been clearer.”

● On February 6, 2008, the American newspaper New York Times mentioned in A Glimpse of Chinese Culture That Some Find Hard to Watch that more members of the audience “had realized that the show was not simply a celebration of the Chinese New Year, but an outreach of Falun Gong, that is banned in China.”

● On January 17, Canadian CBC TV broadcasted a news entitled: Chinese New Year Spectacular “just propaganda”: Chinese Embassy. The news retailed view of Chinese Embassy in Canada and quoted a letter from a Canadian Chinese saying, “We went there looking for traditional Chinese culture and a celebration of New Year and it wasn’t either of those things, really. In the end, I felt deceived.”

● On January 20, 2008, the Toronto-based Canadian newspaper The Star published an article Falun Gong New Year Event Mere Propaganda, stating: “The production is so heavily laden with Falun Gong messages as to negate any pleasure the dancing and singing might have afforded. Art it wasn’t. The choreography was consistently banal, with the performers arranged in rows doing identical gestures. The dancers were under-rehearsed and unremarkable.”

● On February 25, 2008, the British newspaper Telegraph published an article Shen Yun: Propaganda as Entertainment, claiming “Acrobatics, singing and dancing skills are used in the service of a propaganda exercise on the part of Falun Gong.” “Most of the members of the Divine Performing Arts troupe are members of Falun Gong. But their beliefs do not simply form a backdrop to a neutral presentation of traditional Chinese dance and legends. They are the focal point of the evening. Thus the songs boast about the benefit of the laws and principles by which they live.” Sarah Crompton, a journalist from the British newspaper Telegraph, said: “What I really object to is that such a politically motivated performance is being smuggled on to stages around Europe in the name of family entertainment.”

● On Feb. 25, 2008, the Guardian published “Something Creepy” about Falun Gong Performers, saying, “Even if you are sympathetic to the Falun Gong cause, there is something creepy about the evangelical tone with which this is delivered. It is also made worse by the fact that the show’s visual style is like a Disney production, with the cast dressed in gaudy, glittery updates of traditional costumes backed by scenes of soft-focus landscape created by computer animation.”

● On February 25, 2008, the Evening Standard reported Great Pall of China that, “It also reveals much about geo-politics. The company is based in New York and wastes little time bashing the Chinese Communist Party, both in the programme and on stage. You could overlook the politics if the show was any good, but it is dated and sentimental, with comically bad comperes, laughably awful film projections and dance routines that would make panto producers blush.”

● On March 31, 2008, the Melbourne-based Australian newspaper The Age reported: “Many performers of the show are Chinese exiles who follow Falun Gong. Lead dancer and assistant company manager Vina Lee said the show told traditional spiritual stories suppressed by the Chinese Government.”

Because of the political theme, Shen Yun shows have been rejected not only by some countries but also by lots of magnates.

● The Malaysian government canceled a dance performance of Falun Gong which was planned to be staged on March 22-23, 2008. According to a ministry official, the Malaysian government revoked the show’s permit because the Chinese Embassy complained that the organizers — U.S.-based New Tang Dynasty Television station — were supporters of Falun Gong, a spiritual movement that Beijing bans as a dangerous cult.

● New Zealand Herald reported on April 7, 2008 that the Divine Performing Arts show has stirred up controversy. Invited guests are spurning a Chinese cultural performance in Auckland as organisers try to stop a repeat of last year’s situation when not a single politician turned up.

● The Age released on March 31, 2008, about 130 Victorian MPs were invited to a VIP function on opening night but only seven attended. Four MPs who had accepted invitations cancelled at the last minute, without explanation.

Most articles published by Falun Gong media cited “people of all walks” and sang praised about the “excellent shows”. Ironically, these “celebrities”, “statesmen”, and ordinary audiences in western countries talked about the excellence of the performance in terms of costumes, lighting, and stage set but few of them mentioned the content of these programs. Even if there are a few remarks about the content in these articles, the topics center on “traditional Chinese culture” and few of them is about the impression on Falun Gong. The reason why this happens is because Falun Gong organization intends to fool the western countries by covering their real purpose of launching political propaganda in the name of promoting traditional Chinese culture.
