Chen Mingxia: I say “no” to lies compounded by Falun Gong

11 Dec

My name is Chen Mingxia, a villager from Dongnanying Village, Dongguang Town, Dongguang County, Hebei Province. I had lost myself in obsession with Falun Gong and became a “devout disciple” under mental control of Li Hongzhi. In those days when I was cultivating Falun Gong, neither exhortations of the family nor the public voices against Falun Gong turned me back and dent my faith in cultivation. However, its organization repeatedly forced me to tell lies, which made me awoke to my error completely.

In 1998 I began to learn Falun Gong. In the beginning, I was deeply attracted by Li Hongzhi’s preaching “Truthfulness, Compassion and Tolerance” and “To be good people”. That’s why I became a zealous supporter of Falun Gong. Even after Falun Gong was outlawed in 1999, I did not give up cultivating; on the contrary, following the instructions of the Master, I went to Beijing twice for “protecting the Fa”. I even divorced my husband and severed connections with my father and brothers so as to remove barriers on my way of learning Fa and cultivating Gong. My determination to learn Falun Dafa well made me an outstanding member of the local practitioners. Later on, it was said that a feature article about me was published on the brochure Common People in Dongguang sponsored by Minghui Net.

One day in March 2006, Wang Xiaohua from Beiguan Village of Dongguang Town came to me in secrecy: “Our superior has ordered us to investigate the suicide of Shi Shuyan. Since you are in the same village and used to practice Gong together with her, you are perfect for this assignment.” I took the task and in order to write the report well, I spent about one week visiting her neighbors and fellow practitioners. On the basis of my investigation, I wrote a report about her experience from starting to practice Falun Gong and learn Dafa to finally committing suicide, and gave the report to Wang Xiaohua.

After one week, Wang came to me again and said: “Our superior thinks what you’ve written is not good enough. So I’m sorry, but you have to rewrite the report.” Then I told him that I would make an overall investigation again before re-writing. However Wang Xiaohua said: “You misunderstand me. We are ordered to write about the ‘fact’ that Shi Shuyan had already had mental disease before she began to practice Falun Gong. And about how you and other people tried to prevent her from learning Dafa and cultivating Gong.” I protested immediately: “Shi had been normal before she practiced Falun Gong and we did not prevent her from practicing.” On hearing what I said, Wang said sternly: “That’s an order from our superior. If you follow the order, you are protecting Dafa; otherwise you are destroying Dafa.” With this, Wang left.

I was totally perplexed. I thought about this for a whole night and concluded that Wang Xiaohua was not a real Dafa disciple and maybe she was a devil so jealous of the progress I made in cultivation that he made trouble on purpose to obstruct my Consummation.

I told my fellow practitioners what Wang Xiaohua had said to me and warned them to be alert. It never occurred to me that several days later Mr. Gao, head of Falun Gong Dongguang Assistance Station, found me and rebuked me strongly saying that I was destroying Dafa and if I went my own way, I would be destroyed “body and soul”.

I argued that I was just observing the requirement of “Truthfulness” and I was perfectly right. Gao said coldly: “Obviously you are slow at comprehension. The ‘Truthfulness’ you are talking about is the ‘Truthfulness’ of ordinary society. You have to foster your temperament first, and then you’ll understand that what Wang asked is the real ‘Truthfulness’ in Falun world.” Before he left, he urged me again and again to write the report according to what Wang Xiaohua had told me.

The moment Gao left my home my belief in Falun Gong began to collapse. Would the organization of Falun Gong, which strongly blazoned forth “Truthfulness”, in fact order its disciples to tell lies? After a cautious thought, I decided not to write the report.

I told Mr. Gao my decision and he became furious: “You are too bigoted. You will never reach Consummation.” I was disappointed at his remarks but I still held illusions about the Master. I was convinced that those guys misunderstood the Master.

One day in May 2007, I came upon an article titled Topics in Focus is a lie on Common People in Dongguang distributed by Falung Gong organization. The article said that the program on CCTV called white black, and Shi Shuyan was not a Dafa disciple and she committed suicide on account of mental disease. They supported their argumentation with Li Hongzhi’s words of “psychotics and patients of serious diseases are not fit for practicing Falun Gong”.

It agreed completely with what Wang Xiaohua had said.

Evidently, the person who compounded this lie was not Wang Xiaohua or Mr. Gao. It’s the Master who I used to deem as God that invented this lie. At that moment the sacred image of Li Hongzhi in my mind collapsed, and I realized that the “Truthfulness” in Falun Gong world was anything in favor of the cult. Otherwise, they called it “falseness.”

I finally gave up Falun Gong, yet my family never really gave me up for my being heartless. In 2007, my husband remarried me and my father and brothers forgave me. In 2008 my daughter was enrolled into Dalian University Academy of Fine Arts with excellent marks in the national college entrance examination. I did not suffer “extinction of body and soul” for refusing to tell lies; instead I live a better life than before.

Ling Yutai: price of “Ascension in Broad Daylight”

11 Dec

I’m Ling Yutai, born on September 20, 1970, living in Qinggou Village, Qinghe Town, Ji’an City, Jilin Province. My brother and I are orphans, brought up by the villagers. As an adult, I had a strong body luckily and was good at farm work. In addition, I did part-time job in slack season. There was no difficulty in living. However, I became an absolute disabled man due to obsessing with Falun Gong heresy “Ascension in Broad Daylight”.

In August 1997, the famous upstart in village, Bu Jingwen, organized Falun Gong training class. I went to have a look with curiousness and found my brother also practicing there. Bu Jingwen told me, “Falun Gong is of advantage, you can go to heaven and live a happy life after Consummation.” I asked, “Are there big house and virtuous wife in the Paradise?” He smiled and said, “Of course! There is anything you want! Ask your brother is it true or not.” My brother nodded subconsciously.

Since Falun Gong could make “all wishes come true”, I joined the group without hesitation. At first, I practiced it in the morning and evening. As time passed by, I ignored everything including farm work and addicted myself to Falun Gong. To master Falun Gong better and make remarkable progress, I spent 2000 yuan, which was prepared for house decoration, on some books and CDs of Falun Gong and a VCD player. Every day, I locked myself in the room to practice Falun Gong, dreaming that one day I could fly to the heaven and live a happy life. But it was blind and mechanical.

After a long time, I went astray and sunk in the Falun Gong and could not get myself away from it. Practicing Falun Gong, studying the Fa and going up a higher level were all what I was thinking. The illusions of being the Buddha always appeared. I became nervous and insane.

I was fanatical about Falun Gong and angry about the State because the State banned Falun Gong by law in July 1999. Several Falun Gong practitioners and I secretly organized activities such as “spreading the Fa” and “clarify the truth” according to the requests of Master Li. We all believed that only in that way could we go to heaven sooner.

To show my sincerity for Falun Gong, I was totally willing to take out 20,000 RMB as Falun Gong special fund, which was earned from part-time job and was used for the wedding.

One morning of December 2004, it was rather cold. I was practicing Falun Gong beside the stove, then suddenly I felt my body light, as if I was going to fly. I was in a daze and saw the Master waving in the air. I open my eyes wide at once but couldn’t have a clear vision.

I realized it was time to fly to heaven and there was no time to hesitate. I got up quickly, rushed out and cried “Master, wait”. When I ran to stone bridge in the east of the village, I indistinctly found Master Li staring at me in the air. I was so excited and jumped high, but lost conscious immediately.

When I came to life, I was lying in the Patient Room with body bandaged. Later, I knew that I fell in a faint for the big shock when jumping off the bridge. After a period of time, I was found in the snow by a passerby. Police officers soon arrived, sent me to Tonghua People’s Hospital. I was saved, but also turned to be disabled for life.

My brother heard the news and came back from his working place thousand miles away. He could not help crying bitterly, “It is all my fault! At that time, I just wanted to help you find a spiritual sustenance, and cultivate character. I never expected that you went astray and became like this. How can I face our dead parents?” Next year, my brother deposited his savings from part-time job into my account as my basic living expense. Then, he left home for White Mountain and became a monk.

Now, I repented and determined to make a clean break with my lamentable past. My right leg was badly frostbitten, so I walk staggeringly. Because of badly frostbite, my skin is quite rough. I have only fine fingers left, including the thumb of left hand and index, middle, ring, little fingers of right hand. A forty-year-old man is as poor as a church mouse.

Free newspaper?

11 Dec

One day last week the way into Victoria tube station was clogged with people, and once I finally got to the entrance the gates were shut in my face. They do this occasionally when the station gets so full that there’s an imminent prospect of people being shoved off the platforms and onto the track. It can be some time before they re-open, so it wasn’t worth waiting. As I trudged off wearily in the general direction of the office, more or less reconciled to being late, this publication was thrust at me. I have the old commuter’s instinctive tendency to ignore everyone in my path, especially those who are trying to give or sell me something, but for once, perhaps because of the depressing circumstances, I took it.

You may have seen something like it: apparently versions of it are published all over the world. It looks pretty much like a normal newspaper, and many of the articles are straightforward, readable stuff: they may seem a little underpowered somehow, and the cartoons are profoundly unfunny, but it’s not like picking up the ‘Invest in Zambia!” pull-out supplement by mistake. However, a slightly closer examination reveals a special interest in the affairs of China, and a distinctly negative view of the government of the People’s Republic. In fact, the thing is published by Falun Gong.

Falun Gong is like an exercise system with mystical ambitions. Once well-favoured in China, it is now proscribed: some say that the Chinese government is especially sensitive about it because of the precedents in Chinese history for rebellions led by religious sects.

What strikes one most forcibly, though, is what a colossal waste of money and effort the newspaper represents. Of the commuters streaming past, I suppose one in ten took a copy. I should guess no more than half of those read any of it. Perhaps one in ten of those read the articles on Chinese issues: and probably one in a hundred of those changed their opinion. Not even one in a thousand (if there were that many) wrote to their MP or did anything else about it. Net impact on UK and world politics, zero. One of my colleagues probably typifies the general response – when he saw me with my copy he told me he hadn’t taken one because he thought it was produced by the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

If anything, the covert manner of operation embodied in the paper is likely to alienate people, and the vast resources expended in producing it raise suspicions. The journalists involved would surely do better to work as freelances and offer straight pieces on Falun Gong and its problems to mainstream publications wouldn’t they?

The strange ways of Falun Gong

31 Oct

Hu JIntao, the president of China, is due for a big welcome during his two day state visit to Britain: not only does he get to stay with the Queen at Buckingham Palace, but the town is to be floodlit in red, in perhaps a misjudged attempt to make him feel at home.

There are vocal opponents of the state visit of course. Also much in evidence in London over the next few days, though he claims the timing is a coincidence, is Chen Yonglin, formerly the first secretary of the Chinese consulate in Australia, who defected in June and has since been a vocal critic of the regime. Mr Chen appeared at what was described as a press conference in London’s Foreign Press Association, along with three British politicians.  The press conference was sponsored by an organization identified only as the FSC Centre. Inquiries produeced the response that this was the “Future Science and Culture Centre” in Cambridge. You may be none the wiser, and nor was oD. But it began to feel like Falungong. And so it proved.

Now there is nothing wrong with Falungong putting its case against the Chinese government: they have as much right to do that as anyone else. But why the subterfuge? And why the video crews filming the audience, as well as the speakers? And why the still photographer taking pictures of everyone who asked a question? If Falungong advocates democracy and truth, as they say they do, how about a little transparency in their own operations?

Falun Gong turns me into a murderer

30 Oct

My name is Yu Xuewei, born in January 1981, Korean ethnic minority. Graduated from a college, I worked as an assistant at a shopping mall named “Europe-Asia Market” in Changchun City, Jilin Province. I live in the Economic Development Zone of Changchun City. My husband Jin Mingduo is also Korean ethnic minority, born in February 1976. He worked for Changchun FAW-VW after graduating from a high school. We had a clever and lovely son in February 2004.
However, such a happy family as mine has been torn to pieces since both my husband and I became obsessed with Falun Gong. My husband Jin Mingduo was punished in accordance with law in April 2008 for printing, posting and distributing propaganda materials of Falun Gong for the so-called “truth-clarifying”, “anti-persecution” and “pursuing Consummation”. To answer Master’s “call” to pursue an early “Consummation”, I, together with other three Fulun Gong followers, beat another fellow practitioner Xiao Rong to death in order to expel “the evil spirit” from her body and was sentenced to life imprisonment.
My husband Jin Mingduo began to practice Falun Gong in 1997. He did not give it up after we got married in March 2003. Although Falun Gong was frequently criticized by the media at that time, I did not take it seriously since my husband just read the book Zhuan Falun at home or practiced meditation at evenings, never going out for studying Fa or attending the gatherings.
My 51-year-old mother was diagnosed with terminal stage of liver cancer and died less than a month later in December 2003. As her only daughter, I was overcome with grief at the loss of my mother and scared for the decay and death of the human world.
In those days of desperation and anxiety, I followed my husband’s suggestion and read the books like Zhuan Falun that he passed to me.
Li Hongzhi said in his book that “Karma is the root cause of all sickness and misfortune”, “those who really cultivate will not get sick. If you stopped cultivating, you would have already died” and that “when he succeeds in cultivation in the future, he will get whatever he wants just by holding out his hands, and he will have anything he desires. He can do anything he wants, and there is everything in his paradise.”
Are there such good things in the world? Practicing Falun Gong can “eliminate karma” so that you do not have to take medicine when getting ill. After reaching “Consummation”, you can also “be rewarded with fortune and ascension in broad daylight”.
Hence, from disbelieving to half-believing, I finally became obsessed with Falun Gong by and by. I even regretted that I started cultivation too late and that, if I had started cultivation earlier or cultivated with my mother together, she would not have fallen ill, or even if she fell ill, she would not have left me so early with the protection of Master’s “Fashen (body)”.
After a period of cultivation, I finally relieved myself from the pain of my mother’s death. More importantly, my husband and I found ourselves a “common interest”. Every day after work, my husband just could not wait to come back home to exchange the experience of “studying Fa”. We did not quarrel with each other any more, which made me feel the fun of “studying Fa”.
In the summer of 2007, my husband introduced me to Gao Hongqing (born in 1975, graduating from high school, worker of FAW-VW) who had very good “understanding” and Wang Haipeng (born in 1976, graduating from high school, worker of FAW-VW). Through exchanges with them, both of us became even more obsessed with Falun Gong. In that period, I had the same dream of attending Master Li Hongzhi’s lectures almost every night and the Master told me to treasure this “opportunity” and make “further advancement” in order to reach “Consummation” early.
Both Gao Hongqing and Wang Haipeng were my husband’s colleagues, and our homes were close to one another. More importantly, we were all “cultivating” together. Therefore, we met together from time to time to exchange our “minds” and told each other our respective dreams because Master said “what you see in your dreams is all real since your soul truly goes there”. In the way Zhougong interpreted the dreams, we would try to “understand” what Master revealed to us in the dreams, praising and lulling each other, because Master said it would be all right however you understand the dream and it would never go wrong.
On September 22, 2007, Master’s new scripture was published on the Minghui Net, claiming, “The cultivation of Dafa disciples is not only for their own Consummation…To save sentient beings is what the Dafa disciples must do.” Saving sentient beings should surely include those who had been transferred and who had not made “further advancement” because Master Li Hongzhi had said, the reason he extended the Fa-Rectification period was that he wanted “to give a chance to those people”.
We soon became nervous upon hearing this and all began to think who among those we knew had stopped practice Falun Gong or made no “progress”. My husband and I naturally and immediately thought of Jin Mingdong, my husband’s brother.
Like Jin Mingduo, Jin Mingdong began to practice Falun Gong in 1997. When the Government banned Falun Gong in 1999, he was a freshman in the former Jilin Industrial College (now re-named as Changchun Industrial University). He chose to quit school in order to continue his “cultivation”. Giving in to repeated exhortation of the volunteers, he finally gave up Falun Gong. He went to South Korea in 2004 and worked for a Sino-Korean trading company. As he could speak both Korean and English very well and was very capable, he was put into an important position by the company. He could earn over 100,000 yuan a year, excluding daily expenses.
This was really a once-in-a-life-time opportunity. How could we abandon this great mission of “saving sentient beings”?
From 1 to 15 February 2008, we left our son, who was less than 4 years old, to my father and went to South Korea without any hesitation. As it was the first time that we went abroad, we should do some sight-seeing by rights. However, to complete our mission, we did not go anywhere but staying at Jin Mingdong’s home he rented, trying to persuade him.
But our work did not go smoothly at the beginning, and Jin Mingdong was not influenced by our words. I described him vividly my illusions and dreams to let him believe that all of these were real. I also told him that it was almost the time for “reaching Consummation” and that if he gave up like this, all the hardship he experienced would be for nothing. With our earnest “admonitions”, he finally agreed to think about it.
We had to come back home with regret as our visa had expired. Instead of just leaving him as he was, we continued to urge him through long-distance calls or online video chatting.
As the saying goes, those who work hard will get rewarded. On April 4, 2008, having paid all the penalties due to breach of contract and left all “fame, material interest, emotion” including his newly-met girlfriend, Jin Mingdong came back to our home in Changchun. With the feeling of shame and remorse toward “Dafa”, Jin Mingdong cultivated even harder than before after he came back home from abroad.
The return of Jin Mingdong further strengthened our confidence and encouragement in “saving sentient beings”. We felt that our “Gong power” had been increased obviously and that we had stepped further towards “Consummation”. Hence, we decided to continue “saving sentient beings” and look for those who did not make “further advancement”.
Gao Hongqing said that some of his neighbors used to practice Falun Gong. He looked for them secretly. Nevertheless, after he met them, he found they were all grandpas and grandmas, who could not be able to guarantee their time for “advancement” due to heavy household affairs such as picking up their grandchildren to or from school or looking after the patients at home. They provided an important clue, however, that a young woman named Xiao Rong (born in Changchun in 1979 and jobless) cultivated very hard for “further advancement” and seemed “possessed” by something. Her husband watched her closely to prevent her from practicing Falun Gong.

We regarded it as very urgent, so we all decided that we must see this Xiao Rong and find out what on earth her “possession” was. Master Li Hongzhi said, animals like foxes, weasels, rats and willow warblers which could not cultivate into immortals by themselves often “posses” a human being by getting into his/her “mud-ball acupoint”, absorbing the essence of his or her body, so as to cultivate itself into a human form and finally replace this human completely. That human would look like someone at the appearance but in fact was one of these animals. Master mentioned in his Zhuan Falun that he once destroyed a “snake spirit”.
It was me, my husband, Gao Hongqing and Wang Haipeng who went for the first meeting. Xiao Rong talked incoherently and strangely. She talked about this one moment and that the next. For one moment she said that she witnessed Li Hongzhi’s Fashen (body) cleaning her body and for another moment she said that she was a fox spirit that had been with Xiao Rong for thousands of years and waited to see her today…
We did not dare to doubt any word by Xiao Rong, believing that this was the “possession” case mentioned by Master. At the same time when we worshipped Master more, we all regarded this was a test set by Master purposely. Perhaps his “Dharma-eyes” were watching us by the side of us. So, we made up our mind to help Xiao Rong to “expel the evil” so as to attain Consummation earlier.
But how could we “expel the evil”? None of us knew how to do it. So we decided to wait until we got full “understanding” of it.
On April 7, 2008, the fifth day after Jin Mingdong’s return, my husband went to work as he was on a day shift while Jin Mingdong and I stayed at home. At around 10:00 am, Gao Hongqing, who was on a night shift, came to my home, wanting to have a really nice long chat with Jin Mingdong who was regarded as making no “advancement” and to help the latter to restore his “Gong power”. About 12:00 pm, Xiao Rong, having just completed the divorce procedures, also came to my home with the divorce certificate. Upon arrival, Xiao Rong began to speak in tongues, talking for one moment, singing for the next and dancing sometimes. The voice produced from her mouth sounded like that two persons were talking and arguing.
Seeing Xiao Rong’s divorce certificate, we admired her from the bottom of our hearts for her courageous and resolute action. To believe in Dafa and to pursue early “Consummation”, she even gave up her marriage, husband and only-8-year-old son, which made us feel very much ashamed for ourselves. This also further enhanced our determination to save Xiao Rong. We had been deciding to drive away that “evil spirit” thoroughly to let Xiao Rong have a peaceful cultivation; otherwise, Xiao Rong could be ruined if it went on like this. Since we were cultivating together, we could not leave her alone. Moreover, this could probably be a test for us set by Master because he once said that nothing was coincident and all would be the test set for improving our minds.
Hence, we began to do in accordance with the requirements of “Fa”. At first, we formed a circle with Xiao Rong in the centre and read her the scriptures from Zhuan Falun loudly. Then we together sent forth “righteous thoughts” with reading “Fa will make the world right and eliminate all the evil…” However, half an hour later, Xiao Rong was still what she was. It did not work at all. According to Master’s instruction, “Any method could be adopted to stop evil”, we tried to freeze her with cold water, which did not work, neither. Thinking that the “fox spirit” might fear hotness, I boiled some water, put the hot water in a bottle, and then place the bottle on Xiao Rong’s stomach. Xiao Rong cried out for the hotness. We asked her if the “fox spirit” was gone or not. She said yes. So we stopped. But after a while, Xiao Rong began to speak in tongues, behave dottily and make grimaces again. We all thought that the “fox spirit” was rather deceptive. Therefore, following what people did in the TV series, we pricked the upper side of her lips, which did not work. We could do nothing but calling Wang Haipeng whose “Gong power” was superb for help. Wang Haipeng said we should not treat this “fox spirit” with mercy, as the Master said of “being pushed beyond the limits of forbearance”.
Therefore, we four began to beat her. We slapped her in the face first but she cried that she felt no pain and that she wanted us to beat her harder. Then the men kicked her randomly with their feet. Within a short while, Xiao Rong got black and blue all over and her face began to swell. Xiao Rong became much quieter and did not cry much. Finding it worked, we continued to beat her with both our fists and feet until she got down on all fours without any movement…
By this time, Jin Mingdong found something was wrong and said Xiao could probably be dead and should be taken to the hospital. We three all said that could not be possible because all those who practiced Falun Gong were protected by the Master. Even the cars could not kill them, how could we beat her to death? As a matter of fact, Xiao Rong was really dead. She was beaten to death by four of us.

The politics of dancing

28 Apr

Traditional Chinese cultural show has controversial ties to Falun Gong movement

It’s advertised as a cultural spectacular — a lavishly costumed revival of traditional dance and music from China’s pre-Communist past.

Shen Yun Performing Arts, founded in 2006 and based in New York City, promotes itself as “the world’s premier Chinese dance and music company.”

But when an 89-member Shen Yun troupe gives its first-ever performances in Winnipeg Wednesday and Thursday, audience members may enter the Centennial Concert Hall unaware of the show’s controversial ties to Falun Gong.

Falun Gong is a worldwide spiritual movement founded in 1992 and outlawed in the People’s Republic of China since 1999. Arts critics have varied in their opinions of Shen Yun productions, with some finding them dazzling and visually stunning, and others calling them cheesy and amateurish.

But virtually every critic agrees that there are political and religious messages in the two-hour-plus production. The show includes scenes depicting persecution and murder of Falun Gong practitioners in contemporary China.

“One dance (called Nothing Can Block the Divine Path) tells about a young mother being persecuted and beaten to death. Her spirit goes on,” Yanping Lu, the troupe’s production manager, said from Calgary this week.

Another dance called Astounding Conviction, Lu said, depicts a young man unfurling a Falun Dafa (Falun Gong) banner and being thrown in jail, where Buddhas show him magic power.

Lu said most of the show’s 16 dance numbers and four vocal solos don’t deal with persecution, but many have uplifting moral themes and extol virtues promoted by Falun Gong: truthfulness, compassion and forbearance.

Lu said it would be discriminatory to single out Falun Gong in the troupe’s advertising because Falun Gong is just one of many aspects of the show that reflect traditional Chinese values.

Most Shen Yun dancers and musicians are Falun Gong practitioners who are ethnically Chinese but grew up in the West, Lu said.

Several newspapers have described audience-member walkouts at Shen Yun performances and quoted ticket buyers saying they felt misled by advertising that did not mention the Falun Gong theme. In January, a reviewer for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution wrote that at times, the show’s political proselytizing “was as subtle as a Taser shot to the noggin.”

In the New York Times in 2008, Maria Hsia Chang, a professor emerita of political science and author of a book about Falun Gong, described the Shen Yun show as “kind of a PR front to try to normalize Falun Gong’s image.”

The troupe’s extensive website, shenyunperformingarts.org, makes no mention of Falun Gong. Nor does the glossy brochure distributed locally, except for a line in very small, pale type that names the local presenter, the Falun Dafa Association of Winnipeg. Falun Dafa is the formal name for Falun Gong.
